The Maryland Jail System

There are 32 jail facilities in Maryland's 23 counties with a rated capacity of 13,670 inmates. The state jail population was 12,386 in 2005. The Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards inspects jails and enforces standards compliance.

The Maryland Prison System

The Dept. of Public Safety and Correctional Services, had a budget in 2011 of $1.25 billion. The Div. of Correction operates 24 facilities, has 7,200 staff, and an average daily inmate population of 20,891 in FY 2010. One facility was opened in 1811.

The Community Corrections System

The Div. of Parole & Probation, Dept. of Public Safety & Corr. Services, supervised 104,541 probationers and 13,742 parolees at the end of 2009. The Division has approximately 1,100 employees.
